This is another great location in NW Portland that I scouted for a recent senior session, that I decided would look great at night. We had a really great night weather wise, and even with sunset not even beginning until after 9pm shooting night exposures during the summer is pretty nice. Mark and Kevin joined me on this evening.

Awhile back on a scout for locations for senior shoots, I discovered that the industrial area in NE Portland that we had previously visited on Night 3 actually had a lot more going on for it a little further down the road than we had ventured. So this time I went back with Kevin, Mark, and Jos. We had a great time photographing this spot.

Fourth of July Along the Willamette River

Fourth of July on the Portland, Oregon waterfront. Hope everyone had a nice fourth! Melissa and I didn’t really get our act together in time to be social, but we do live within walking distance to the fireworks which is pretty cool. This year I attempted to spice up my normal attempt at photographing the explosions by doing some stuff with my tilt/shift lens, purposely out of focus stuff, and some light trails.

100 Nights Project | Night 3

Twilight rural, and rural industrial night exposures in Dundee, Oregon. On this particular night, the shoot probably could have better been titled 100 Twilights, as most of the photos we took were before the sun went down. Mark and I had headed south to meet our friend Kevin in Dundee, which is a rural area about an hour outside of Portland. We learned a few things that day. First, the coolest things to potentially photograph are on private property or in an area where you can’t easily pull over. Second, people in Dundee are obsessed with stopping and asking you if you need an ambulance. And third, the police once they have established you are not trying to start an Al Qaeda terror cell in rural Oregon, and pretty interested in photography in general.

Women For Success | First Anniversary Party

Women For Success celebrated their first anniversary a few nights ago at Portland’s Living Room Theaters Lounge. It was nice to see the ladies with red scarves once again. I’m really proud of them for reaching their goals! Keep up the great work and good luck with the cause next year!

Facebook Profile Photo | Continuum Photography

Facebook profile photos are looked at by our friends, family, clients, and even perspective employers. Do any of these descriptive terms pop into your mind when browsing through a friend’s Facebook photos- blurry, out of focus, blown out, pixelated, grainy, washed out, and maybe just downright unflattering? I’ll be honest, what passes for a profile photo on Facebook these days isn’t always everyone’s best look. Of course I’m probably a little more photo critical than most, but you’re all beautiful people, why not look your best online? That’s why I’m declaring the month of July to be- Continuum Photography Facebook Profile Photo Month. Have we taken a photo of you? Put it up and be eligible to win the praise of of your friends and a free print! And after all, who doesn’t love a popularity contest?

Portland fashion photography – Clair Vintage Inspired Spring/Summer 2011

I love shooting Portland fashion photography, and this Spring/Summer 2011 photoshoot added in two more of my favorite things: fuzzy animals, and a good cause. I’ve been the go-to professional fashion photographer for Clair Vintage Inspired since Fall of 2009, and Alyson has become one of my favorite partners-in-crime for spontaneous breakfasts, laptop work parties, and any number of wacky adventures. (I even got to photograph her offbeat Portland wedding last fall!)

For her Spring/Summer collection this year, Alyson threw down her considerable moxie in support of the Newberg Animal Shelter, so we included local shelter pets who’ve found loving homes in the photoshoot. Dozens of props, miles of lint roller tape, and one paw-print-covered backdrop later, we had amazingly fun photos of her new garments, and the perfect project to draw attention to the plight of shelter animals. Alyson is offering free Clair goodies to anyone who donates to the Newberg Animal Shelter, and we’d both love to see you bring one of their adorable pets into your home, too.

I also can’t recommend her clothes enough–you’ll often see me wearing them, and they look fabulous on just about anyone! Now that the weather in Portland is actually getting warm enough for Spring/Summer clothes, stop by one of your favorite local boutiques, and snag some Clair for yourself.

As the day went on, I was continually surprised at how energetic and well-behaved all of the pets were. Maggie, a terrier who was adopted in 2010, was a good enough sport to work with us for multiple outfits.

Chevi (right) was rescued from a street transient in 2004 and has lived in a warm and loving home ever since. On the left? One of Alyson’s own adopted pets, Rufus, who gladly put on a bow tie and hopped around for treats!

Dogs weren’t the only pets to make an appearance during the shoot: we also had rescue cats Chloe and Blanche working with us, and even a pair of lovebirds, Opal and Purl, who were adopted from the Oregon Humane Society. On this particular night my friends Mark, Ashley, and myself headed to a location in NE Portland’s industrial sector first, and then an area along Interstate Avenue that has some cool neon signs. I wasn’t feeling as inspired with these locations as I would like, and ironically we revisited the industrial location a few night’s later and went further in and got much better results. We still had a lot of fun though and these are the shots that I liked from the evening.

100 Nights Project | Night 1

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I have always really loved taking long exposures at night. I describe it to people like it’s my moment of Zen. A quiet, introspective experience where you process a scene that has taken on completely different characteristics from what it looks like in the day time. Due to the nature of light and photography, you have to be a lot more thought out in how you set up your compositions. It’s a different mindset than walking around taking photos in the daylight hours.

For some time now I’ve really wanted to put together a project and book of some of these photos I take in my spare time, as they are so completely different from what I do on the professionally side of things. A few other local photographers and I have come up with a project title called “100 Nights,” and the specifics of which I’ll be eventually getting around to here. In the meantime there are quite a few photos I want to share from the first few nights. If you have a particular favorite please comment!
